The Meaning Behind "Ruling Light"

The name "Ruling Light" for our family missions was born on July 8th when I was reading a booklet by Kenneth Hagin. I heard in the Spirit to search for the meaning of "Authority" in the Hebrew language. I typed the word into google search and found a page with the titel "how to say “authority” in Hebrew".

I found this description: "One of the words used for authority/rulership in Hebrew is: שְׂרָרָה (seh-rah-RAH). The root of שררה is שׂ.ר.ר (s.r.r) meaning "rule". It is also the root of the name שָׂרָה – Sarah (sah-RAH)", which is my own name. Sarah is a Hebrew name and means: lady, princess, queen. The word Sará (שָׂרָה), is also a verb, meaning: to be or become great, to contend, to wrestle, to overcome, to rule.

Knowing this, I looked up the meaning of my husband's name "Lucas". Lucas is derived from the Latin lux, which means “light.” It comes from the Latin verb lucere, meaning to be light and to shine. The meaning of the name Lucas is "Bringer of Light", or simply "Light".

Sarah + Lucas -> Ruling Light

When I saw our names Sarah and Lucas in combination meaning "Ruling Light",

I remembered Genesis 1:16 where it says:

"Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night..." - Genesis 1:16

The greater light is the ruling light for the day, the sun. The lesser light is the moon.

Immediatly another verse came to my mind in John 1.

"John the Baptist came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world." - John 1:7-9

Jesus is the greater light, the true light (sun) and John the Baptist is the lesser light (moon). And just like the sun is a true light source, and the moon only reflects the light of the sun.

The Ruling Light as a term for the sun therefore is also standing for the name of Jesus. Scripture is showing us how Jesus is indeed the Ruling Light.

I also love how Jesus's face shines like the sun when he is seen during his transfiguration and in the moment when John saw Jesus, written in the Book of Revelation.

"And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light." - Matthew 17:2
In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. - Revelation 1:16

The sun which gives light to the natural world, is nothing else but a symbol for our Lord Jesus. The ruling star in our universe, the only natural light source for the earth. In the book of Habakkuk 3:4 the prophet also describes the Lord as sunlight, saying:

"His radiance was like the sunlight; rays flashed from His hand, where His power is hidden." - Habakkuk 3:4

And Isaiah prophesied the coming of the Christ as a Light shining in the darkness:

"The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them." - Isaiah 9:2

Jesus is confirming this prophecy about himself by saying that He is the light of the world:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12

In any way, Jesus is the Ruling Light and we loved that our names "Sarah" and "Lucas" do have a meaning that is the combination of it. God bless!
